The Proxmox storage hosts VM, ISO disks, backups and snippets. Understanding local-lvm, adding volumes and resizing avoids service interruptions. This guide details allocation, disk extension and space surveillance.
Common storage types
- local, ISO, templates, backup files
- local-lvm, VM disks (LVM thin logical images)
- local-zfs, if ZFS configured (native snapshots)
Monitor space
- Datacenter → Storage, use by volume
- Node → Summary, root disc and LVM
- Panel monitoring, monitoring Proxmox
- 90 % advance alert to avoid VM write-off
Add Disc to VM
- VM stopped or online (hot-add if enabled)
- Hardware → Add → Hard Disk
- SCSI/VirtIO bus, storage local-lvm, size Go
- In the OS: partition, LVM expands, or mount new volume
Resize an existing disk
- Hardware → disk → Resize, increase size
- Linux:
growpart+resize2fsorlvextend - Windows: Disk Management → Extend Volume
The total size of VM drives cannot exceed the storage allocated to your VDS offer. Upgrade formula so saturation.
Cleaning
- Remove unused ISO
- Archive or delete old backups vzdump
- Consolidated snapshots, snapshots
Troubleshooting
- Cannot allocate extent, LVM full, free space
- VM read-only, saturated storage, emergency release
