Deploy a LXC container on Proxmox

The LXC containers share the kernel of the Proxmox host and consume less RAM than a KVM VM. Ideal for Linux services (nginx, light bases, bots), they start in seconds. This guide covers creation, templates and console access.

LXC vs KVM, when to choose?

Create a CT container

  1. Proxmox Node → Create CT
  2. CT ID, hostname, root password or SSH key
  3. Template: Debian 12, Ubuntu 22.04... (downloaded from Proxmox)
  4. Root disc : 8-20GB depending on usage
  5. CPU & RAM : 1 vCore / 512 MB minimum
  6. Network: vmbr0, IPv4 DHCP or static
  7. Start and connect to SSH or console

Recommended configuration

  • Activate nesting only if Docker in LXC (advanced use)
  • Mounts bind for persistent data if necessary
  • Regular updates: apt update && apt upgrade

Security

A compromised container has a different surface than a VM. Isolate public services and apply proxmox firewall to the CT level.

Troubleshooting

  • CT does not ping, IP, gateway, firewall host
  • Template unavailable, download via Proxmox storage → CT Templates

Complete VM: create VM KVM.
