The snapshots Proxmox capture the disk and memory (optional) state of a VM or CT at one T-minute. Indispensable before updating OS, kernel patch or migration, they allow a rollback in minutes. This guide covers creation, restoration and good practices.
Types of backup
- Snapshot, light snapshot, chain over local storage
- Backup (vzdump), complete archive to backup storage
- Sauvages panel, listed in the client area if option active
Create a snapshot
- Select VM or CT in the Proxmox tree
- Tab Snapshot → Take Snapshot
- Explicit name:
avant-maj-nginx-2026-06 - Uncheck Include RAM unless required exact memory status (heavier)
- Confirm, snapshot available in seconds to minutes depending on size
Limit the number of snapshots kept: each snapshot consumes disk space on your allocation.
Restore a snapshot
- Stop the VM if it turns (recommended)
- Snapshot → select instant → Rollback
- Confirm, the disk state returns to this snapshot
- Restart VM and check service
Backups vzdump (planned)
For complete exportable backups:
- Datacenter → Backup → Add, VM selection, time window, snapshot/stop mode
- Storage destination : local or share backup
- Restore restoration from the .vma or .tar archive
Good practices
- Snapshot before each production change
- Test the restoration on VM staging
- Combine local snapshots and off-site backups for critical data
Troubleshooting
- Rollback impossible, existing children snapshots, delete the most recent first
- Full disk space, delete old snapshots, see Storage
